Abstract

A reflection on my own work as a translator (in this case, of Hegel’s Logic) involves an attempt at an interpretation of the meaning of translation in general. From this attempt, the following hypothesis emerges: to translate means to inhabit the interval, without the possibility of finding a tertium interveniens that allows a transition without residue from one text to another. It is not possible to go to the other language without tearing up one’s own, nor to return to one’s own language without nostalgia for what has been abandoned. To translate is to be in partibus infidelium (but, perhaps, to think is nothing more than to translate and to establish a dialogue – even and above all, with the dead ones).
