Abstract

This work aims to show that a better understanding of the thought of Leibniz, such as exposed in the Essais de Theodicée, is presumably possible on the one hand focusing on lexicography, particularly referring both to the Latin meaning of terms and to Seventeenth and Eighteenth-Centuries Dictionaries; on the other hand it appears very interesting to analyze how some important French lemmas like «comprendre» and «expliquer» or even the fundamental concept of «convenance» were understood in German translations, that is, putting them in Leibniz’s mother tongue and in doing so it is possible to find out how challenging this is in many ways, not only for technical reasons, but also because a systematic concept is needed.
