CFP: “Heidegger and/in/on Translation” (1/2026), ed. by Luca Illetterati and Elena Nardelli

In 2020, the journal Verifiche dedicated a double special issue – titled “Hegel and/in/on Translation,” edited by Saša Hrnjez and Elena Nardelli – to the relationship between Hegel’s philosophy and the topic of translation. This special issue of Verifiche, “Heidegger and/in/on Translation,” aims to build upon this philosophical and editorial project, this time addressing the specificity of the relationship between Heidegger’s philosophy and practical and theoretical questions related to translation.

This relationship can be approached on three different levels:

  • The level of the explicit observations on translation voiced by Heidegger in various of his works.
  • The level of Heidegger’s own translation activities and the extent to which they formed a constitutive and decisive moment in the development of his philosophical project.
  • The level of translations of Heidegger’s works into other languages and traditions, that is to say, the level of the reception and effects of translations of Heidegger’s vocabulary and prose.

The following questions may serve as guides for analysis:

  • Is it possible to deduce a theory of translation from Heidegger’s works?
  • What role did Heidegger’s translations of ancient thinkers (Aristotle, Sophocles, Heraclitus, Anaximander, Laozi, among others) play in the genesis of his own philosophy? And what is the connection between these translations and Heidegger’s theoretical remarks?
  • What are the main difficulties faced by those who undertake the task of translating Heidegger’s vocabulary and style? To what extent have these choices influenced the reception of his philosophy, ushering in new traditions of thought?

Manuscripts must be no longer than 35,000 characters. Papers should be in English, Italian, French, German, Spanish or Portuguese; other languages can be considered upon agreement with the editors.

Full papers should be sent to the editors, Elena Nardelli (elena.nardelli@unipd.it) and Luca Illetterati (luca.illetterati@unipd.it), by June 30, 2025. Please also include a short abstract (approx. 1,500 characters), 4–10 keywords, and a title in English.
